About Claudia

Healing happens when we replace judgment with grace and self-compassion.

I'm Claudia Gahagan, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Somatic Experiencing Practitioner™ with a private practice in Kingston, New York, serving adults throughout the Hudson Valley and beyond via telehealth.

My work is rooted in a simple belief: that healing isn't only something we think our way through; it's something we feel our way through. I specialize in working with adults who have tried other approaches and found them incomplete. People who are self-determined, who haven't given up, but who are frustrated. People who know something needs to change, even if they can't say what. Yet. If that sounds familiar, you're probably in the right place.

I work from an identity-affirming, anti-oppressive, and neurodiversity-informed foundation. Every client brings a whole self into the room: their history, their body, their culture, and their nervous system. The work honors all of it.

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)

I offer KAP as a central part of my practice, a treatment that uses medicine to create neuroplasticity, opening a window for the psychotherapy I provide. Within that window, I work with both top-down and bottom-up approaches, integrating mind and body in ways that can reach what other treatments have not.

My KAP training comes from Phil Wolfson, MD, founder of the Ketamine Training Center and a pioneering voice in the field. I work in partnership with Journey Clinical, whose prescribers handle the medical side of care while I provide the therapeutic preparation, presence, and integration that give the experience meaning and lasting impact.

KAP is not a shortcut. It's an invitation into a deeper relationship with yourself, one that requires intention, support, and a safe container. That's what I'm here to provide.

I also offer psychedelic integration support for those who have had expanded state experiences outside of a clinical context and are seeking skilled therapeutic support to make meaning of what arose.

Somatic Experiencing®

As a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner™ (SEP), I work with the nervous system directly, gently, skillfully, at a pace your body can tolerate. Developed by Dr. Peter Levine, Somatic Experiencing® understands trauma not as a story to be retold, but as an unfinished biological process waiting to complete. The work is quiet, precise, and often surprising in how much can shift without having to revisit every painful detail.

My approach

My clinical foundation includes training in Internal Family Systems (IFS)-informed practice, motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, compassion-focused therapy, behavioral activation, mindfulness, and psychoeducation, alongside intensive fieldwork in crisis intervention and trauma-informed care. I also draw on training in Dr. Abi Blakeslee's Implicit Psychotherapy.

My path

My path to this work is personal as well as professional. Before becoming a therapist, I lived a full professional life in organizational and event leadership, including as Associate Director of Events and Conference Services at the American Museum of Natural History. That path wasn't a detour. It gave me something graduate school couldn't: an understanding of how people function under pressure, how systems shape behavior, and what it actually feels like to navigate a demanding life while carrying unresolved pain.

I know what it is to carry trauma, and I know what it is to find unexpected relief — including through KAP, which has been transformative in my own life. That experience doesn't give me your answers. But it means I understand, from the inside, what it takes to turn toward yourself when everything in you wants to turn away.

I received my BA in Psychology from California State University, Chico, and my MSW from Fordham University.

Access & community

I believe healing should not be a privilege. My practice includes a small number of reduced-fee slots for individual therapy, and I am proud to partner with Thank You Life, a nonprofit that provides financial assistance to those who cannot otherwise access Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy. I am also affiliated with Family of Woodstock, a cornerstone of the Hudson Valley's community mental health infrastructure. If cost is a barrier, please reach out. There may be a path.

I hold memberships with the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), the Somatic Experiencing International (SEI) community, and the Hudson Valley Guild of Mental Health Professionals (HVGMHP).

SE training community

I am an SEI-approved Beginning Provider, offering personal SE sessions to students in the Beginning level of Somatic Experiencing® training. Sessions are available at a student rate of $150, or $100 for domestic scholarship students. I also serve as an SE Assistant at the Intermediate level. I am also available for consultation.

"Before I began KAP therapy sessions, I was 'locked up,' convinced that I was essentially incapable of growth. Claudia Gahagan's insight, patience, and empathy have completely 'opened me up.' It isn't what I've learned so much as what I've unlearned, what I've realized I can let go of that has set me free. For perhaps the first time in my life I can say, without a trace of sarcasm, that I am genuinely happy."
